When solving thorny collaboration problems, why do engineers and managers always seem to turn to tools as their first option?

It’s because tools are tangible, and they give us a sense that we’re doing *something* about a problem. However, the vast majority of the time, tools brought in without thought or understanding of both the current culture and process can be doomed to the worst kind of failure - user apathy.

How do we use tools to solve collaboration problems instead of creating more issues? By listening to our communities, watching what they adopt virally, and then tailoring an overall process to accomplish their goals. Then we consider what tools might ft with the process we created. In this talk, Guy Martin will share success stories and challenges he’s faced applying these lessons to both open source and inner source efforts in companies throughout this career.
