Over the past decade, open source software has become a mainstream transition in enterprise IT and the technology industry at large. However, confusion abounds when it comes to quantifying and appreciating the value captured by the vendor ecosystem and associated common patterns which have emerged given the past 10 years of data and history.

In this talk, we briefly explore the history of OSS commercialization and investigate data points supporting the following dynamics across a data set that covers ~30 businesses generating $100M+ in revenue thanks to OSS:

-VC dollars invested overall
-IPO market for large OSS companies
-Employed workers focusing exclusively on building OSS projects/products
-License model patterns
-Cloud providers like Google use OSS to influence developers and IT, making it pivotal to adoption and business strategies
